About 10,000 years ago the climate warmed at the end of the last ice-age. The prairies, with a few areas of pine trees, made way for the current forests. Wild boar and deer replaced herds of mammoths and reindeer.
The last hunter-gatherers of the Lémance Valley adapted to the new environment and exploited the natural resources. Tools were characterized by small flint devices or microliths fixed with resin. From this period onwards the bow and arrow became widespread.

The museum provides an opportunity to learn more about these ancient societies, their culture and their ways of life.
The Lémance Valley is rich in prehistoric remains, many of which were studied by the archaeologist Laurent Coulonges in the nineteen twenties. He discovered a new prehistoric culture on the Martinet site, which he named Sauveterrian (9,500 to 7,000 BC), and which is internationally recognized.
The museum places the discoveries made in the Lémance region in the general context of European prehistory. Sauveterrian culture is presented in didactic form, with the evolution of hunting techniques and the appearance of the bow and arrow, which was predominant in the Mesolithic period, being particularly well-illustrated.
